Planning for the end of your maternity leave can be an extremely emotional time. You may experience sadness because you are leaving your baby for part of the day. On the other hand, you may experience the excitement of getting back to work and interacting with adults. Then there is the guilt and sadness for feeling torn between these two issues. Rest assured all of these feelings are quite normal.
So, what can you do to make this transition easier? At the TBCC we believe that having a breastfeeding plan will make the transition back into the workforce easier.
Here are some simple steps you can start with…
- Start to store extra milk during your maternity leave, so you have a “stash” while you’re away.
- Find a day care provider that is experienced working with breastfeeding moms and babies.
- Come up with a pumping schedule that fits within your work day.
- Have a “practice day” before work starts back officially to practice your new routine.
The lactation consultants at TBCC offer a Preparation for Return to Work Class monthly at our office. During this class we cover a range of topics to smooth out the rough spots of this transition period.
